Learn to play guitar - what is the best and quickest way to learn to play the guitar? That is the driving question that so many folks want the answer to. Should you buy a book, take some lessons, get a “learn guitar DVD", or what? This question is something that lots of beginning guitar players struggle with…

I have been working on this thing -learn to play guitar - since I got my guitar last Christmas. I definitely wanted to get that guitar, and I wanted to learn to play the guitar quite badly. I have been working with Jamorama, and I have been really happy with this course.

In my struggle to learn to play my guitar I have also been buying up lots of other books. I even have one on music theory, and another course on ear training. I guess this learning guitar thing has gotten to be something of a passion.

And that is what it pretty much needs to be if I am going to learn how to play guitar with any real skill… because the bottom line is that making music does NOT come easy to me at all. Nevertheless, I am having lots of fun… and feel no pressure. My expectations for my guitar playing is pretty low.

However, now I have a little pressure… I am going on a bike trip soon - basically a week long camping trip with a bunch of other folks. One of those going is bringing a guitar and encouraging others to bring any instruments they might have. Hmmmm. I can hardly play, and haven’t never played with anyone else, or in front of anyone else. Should my guitar stay or should it go?

Time to start really cranking on my practicing and learn how to play the guitar!

Today I went looking for free guitar chords. As I have mentioned elsewhere… the Internet has to be the greatest thing for guitar players since the invention of wood. Well, that might be exaggerating things just a bit, but finding free guitar chords is a whole lot easier than it used to be…

This is the deal with free guitar chords - they are pretty much everywhere online. You can find tabs and chords for your guitar for free just about everywhere. In this case, when I was looking for chords… I wasn’t looking for song chords or song tabs for guitars, but I was looking for some good resources on how to actually play chords…

You see, I am very much a beginning guitar player, so I am still working on chord basics… so I definitely want to find those free guitar chord resources. I mean, like everyone else I have the obligatory beginning guitar book that has diagrams of the basic guitar chords (and not so basic chords). But sometimes that book can be hard to find, or hard to use. So I wanted to find some good rescources for beginners - people who are jus learning the guitar and may not have one of those books.

So here are some of the cool resources I found that have free guitar chords:

These are all great resources filled with tons of guitar chords… and they are all free. Now it is time to get to work and start making your fingertips sore. Spend an hour a day with these chords and you are going to be playing for friends and neighbors in no time. Just keep working on those guitar chords.

Nirvana guitar tabs - there are lots of places to get free guitar tabs, but I decided to go on a hunt for Nirvana chords and tabs. The first place to look for guitar tabs (or at least the first place that I go looking for tabs) is at ultimate-guitar.

So I wandered over there and this is what I found for Nirvana guitar tabs…

The nice thing over there is sorting by band names… I plugged in “Nirvana Guitar Tabs” and came out with all kinds of songs. There are tabs, chords, and bass tabs… sweet. Here is a sample of what I found:

The Walden D570 acoustic guitar is the guitar I almost bought. It was a toss up betweent the Walden d570 and the Walden D610… and the Taylor 110.

It was a very tough decision, but in the end I decided not to go with the Walden D570…

It was sorta funny, I spent so much time in Canyon Music on Second Avenue… just playing these guitars. And you have to remember that I couldn’t really play. I could play a C chord, and I could sorta play a G chord (after the Ian, the guy working at Canyon Music, confirmed that I was making the chords right). Oh yeah, I could also strum the open strings. So I sat there with the Walden D570, as well as the Taylor 110… and the guitar I eventually decided to get - the Walden D610.

I went back to the store three times, and could not come up with a front runner. Then one time I went back and the Walden D570 was not there - it had been sold. In fact, it had been sold to a woman who came in and took a quick look at it one time when I was actually in there playing around with it.

Hmmm… all of a sudden the Walden d570 was no longer in the picture - after all, I was getting the guitar for Christmas… and it was not only a week away. So I decided to get the D610. And I couldn’t be happier. Still, I really did like that d570.

OK, now let’s go looking for guitar chords for Green Day. This search is in part sponsored by my search for Johnny Cash guitar chords… and partly because I’ve been into Green Day since their first record. If anyone can’t see the connection between Green Day and Johnny cash, well, it is plain as day to me.

Acoustic guitars are really wonderful things - I couldn’t be happier with my decision to get an acoustic guitar. Of course, I didn’t really get it for myself… it was Santa Claus… but I am still pretty happy with this guitar buying decision.

Lots of people say electric guitars are easier to play than acoustic guitars are…

However, it is pretty hard to bring an electric guitar along on a river trip. Actually, I suppose it would be pretty easy to bring it along - they are smaller than acoustic guitars, so they would pack better. However, if you are sitting around the campfire, no one would be able to hear you playing unless your brought an amp… and a really long extension cord.

Now don’t get me wrong about this whole acoustic guitar thing… I imagine that I will eventually be getting an electric guitar as well. Maybe next Christmas. But right now I am sticking with an acoustic. I want to be able to sit around in my living room strumming the guitar… and going and hooking up an amp somehow doesn’t fit into that for me. For the style and the times that I want to play, an acoustic guitar is the thing for me.

Now the real question is WHICH acoustic guitar. As I have written eslewhere, I am really happry with my Walden D610. But I could definitely see getting another acoustic sometime. Like a nice Taylor… or maybe one of those carbon fibers so I don’t have to worry about the guitar on my river trips.

So I decided it is time for some guitar lessons. I am doing great… been playing for maybe six weeks now. I still love my Jamorama program… for a self-taught program, I am really having a hard time finding anything better than Jamorama.

But I am finding myself lapsing into playing the same chords that I really like to play, and I think I could get a bit more of a push from a few guitar lessons…

I figure if I take lessons, then I might have someone pushing me out of my comfort zone. And being such a beginner, it would be nice to have someone to ask questions. I figure if I get some guitar lessons right now, then it could fix some bad habits that I have right now… bad habits that might be harder to correct after I have played for a long time.

So how do you go about finding a guitar teacher - someone that can give you guitar lessons? That is a darn good question. I figure I can start by asking some of the guitar players that I know. And I should try asking at some of the music stores around.

The one thing that I do know is that there are good guitar lessons and bad guitar lessons… good guitar teachers and bad guitar teachers. It is just like anything else. I want a good teacher, and I know there are plenty out there. So now it is time to start searching for my teacher. As they say, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. So I guess we will see if I am ready for guitar lessons.

Are you looking for a used guitar? Let me tell you about how I went about choosing, how I looked at used guitars, and how I ended up with my guitar.

First off, let’s assume you are looking for a first guitar - basically a first used guitar. I start off there because if you are experienced, then you probably know how to find the used guitar that you are looking for - or at least you have a good sense of what you are looking for…

I know someone who picked up a very nice used guitar at a pawn shop for $100. It has really nice, low action… and it sounds great. A really nice guitar, and a great bargain for the price. Actually, that used guitar was a great bargain for twice the price.

The key is that the buyer of that used guitar - Amanda (also know as “Amanda Earth And Sky” for reasons that are just a little to obscure to write about here) had a hidden weapon. Her boyfriend, Michael B, is a very experienced guitar player… and he could help here sort out the good, the bad, and the ugly among used guitars.

I can’t imagine a brand new guitarist walking into a pawn shop to look at used guitars. The odds are they would end up with some unplayable piece of junk with super-high action.

Of course, this doesn’t just apply to used guitars at pawn shops… with any used guitar you really have to be know what you are doing before you buy one. Otherwise, you could just have an expensive mistake. And worse, that mistake might keep you from enjoying guitar playing and could really thwart your learning.
